Learn to chain fuse Class “C” effects to create a Mini Show on a Board or and an exciting flight of spinning effects.  This course is designed for Junior Pyros 7 to 10 years of age.

Shell building basics made simple by following step by step instructions and using Class "C" items as inserted effects.  Class size is a maximum of 50 participants.  There are two classes, as is tradition, one for the ladies, and one for the gentlemen.  Fee is $15.00.

Mini Girandola Made from Commonly Available Household Items

This is an entry level, fun course. In about an hours time you will make and shoot a "Mini Girandola."  This is limited to new members and junior pyros who have not taken the course.  Please give others a chance to experience the wonders of Mini-Girandola's!  Cost is $10 per person.

Mini Girandola Competition

A simple competition, open to any PGI member. Here is your chance to show off your mini Girandola skills.  Drivers must be commercial Class "C" devices. Fusing can be quick match or any other item.  Entries will be weighed, and must weigh one pound our less.  Remember that these are "Mini Girandolas."  1/4 inch launch sticks will be provided. Paul Biersach's  Dragon's Breath

You have heard about it ! You may have seen it ! Now learn it ! Paul Biersach's "Dragons Breath" !  My formulas and complete instructions on the safe firing of a liquid fuel fireball from a steel mortar tube. This effect has been shown at PGI conventions the last three years. The WPAG Welcome To Wisconsin show in Appleton 2006 and the Ohio Pyrotechnic Arts Guild show in Fargo, ND 2007 and in Gillette. Time permitting I will touch base on other known formulas and ghost mines.

Building 3" Italian Style shells for competition with purchased components

Build a pair of 3" Italian style shells with purchased components to enter into level 1 beginner competition.  Note: this workshop is limited to those people that have never built an Italian shells and or any shell entered into competition.  Please save the seats for the newer members to give them a chance to learn.    All shells will be shot in competition.  Here is your chance to win an award!

Making Whistle Mix in a Safer Way

This course shows how to make small quantities of whistle mix using the baggie method with wet ingredients. The seminar will also demonstrate how to press a whistle rocket and it will emphasize safety aspects when working with whistle.

Making Spolettes for Reliability and Accuracy

This presentation will concentrate on methods of making spolettes very accurate and reliable in a variety of fireworks effects.  We will also continue where past articles and presentations have left off.  Great timing is often the difference between good fireworks and amazing fireworks.  Hammer shells, draw-outs, multiple ring shell of shells, chains, and other applications where timing is crucial will be discussed.

Hand Rolled Chocked Rocket Casings and Time Fuse Demonstrations

Before clay and hydraulic presses, rocket casings were rolled wet and chocked to form the nozzle.. Roy shows the correct technique for the process.  The second demonstration is a technique for hand rolling time fuse.  The third demonstration is an original method of making black match.  These are unique demonstrations of processes that were once regularly used in the industry, but now have been supplanted by modern techniques and machines.  Participants will make a hand rolled time fuse and test burn it.  One class member gets to crimp a 4-lb rocket case.  Very Cool!

Making Cut White Strobe Stars

We will make a small batch of white strobe stars by cutting, rather than rolling, and show how to prime them.  Then, using a previously-made set of stars, we will make a small shell which will be displayed later in the week.

Creamora Fireballs 101

Attendees’ will learn how to safely make a Creamora fireball.  They will learn the “Do’s and Don’ts”, what materials work best, and a few tricks of the trade.  They will also receive everything they need, a bucket, bowl, launch bag and Creamora to make this special effect.  If the attendees want to shoot their bucket at convention, the presenter will also work with the attendees and supply a e-match and black power at that time.

Binary Mixing of Flash Powder for Report Devices

So, you know you can put a 60 gram report heading on your “Best Large Rocket Motor” competition entry. You don’t want to travel cross-country with assembled flash devices, though. And, you can’t mix open flash, or even possess it, on site at the PGI convention. What’s a person to do? The answer is given in this seminar: Binary Mixing of Flash Powder for Report Devices. Vender FFFF Hospitality

The class C vendors sponsor a July 4th type party at convention.  Every 4th of July party should have Fireworks, Food, Fun, Friends, and Fellowship.  All members can enjoy a sky full of quality fireworks, and savor some food and soft drinks on open shooting nights (Saturday and Thursday). Also, they want to pay tribute to the many volunteers who make PGI work, especially Officers & Staff, Safety, Registration,  Security, Fire & Medical..   Weather permitting; the Hospitality tent will be set up near the class C shooting area.  Snacks and soft drinks may be available earlier, but the food line should open around 8 PM.  Volunteers and sponsors may go through earlier, and an express line will be set up to allow the volunteers and sponsors to get through the line quickly during Hospitality (Wear your volunteer T-Shirt and show your volunteer badge for quick recognition.  Entrees usually available for vegetarians – ask if you do not see any.,  Line will be open until midnight, or until the food runs out.  Volunteers are welcome.  See Gary Lillich if you want to help in Hospitality.   Additional sponsors are always welcome. Vendor FFFF Hospitality is the new and improved Afterglow for Saturday and Thursday nights.   Browse the wares in the vendor sales booths, take some merchandise to try out, shoot it, get some food in Hospitality, sit down, relax and eat while watching other fireworks in the sky during open shooting.

Saturday Night Stragglers

Do you usually stay an extra night after PGI convention?  Plane not leave until Sunday or Monday?  Part of the cleanup crew, staying over Saturday night?  Want more time to reminisce with fellow pyros? Started in 2006 from an idea germinated in '05 by Old Snorts Rob Berk and Gary Lillich, this will be the third annual Stragglers get-together.  We will gather at 7 PM in a private room at a local restaurant for an evening of food, fellowship, and reminiscing.  We will welcome sponsors to help cover part of the cost.  Your only cost will be your food and drink.  Let us know if you would be interested in attending; all PGI members are welcome. This class is designed to give the beginner a solid foundation on fireworks terminology, the different devices, the various effects, components, construction and usage of fireworks.  Techniques for building single break Oriental and single break Italian shells will be demonstrated.  Every beginner needs to start somewhere.  This is the place to get your questions answered and get some direction.  Stop on by and learn how to paint color in the sky!

Tourbillion's

Tourbillions (also known as “geysers,” whirlwinds," “revolving rockets,” “table rockets,” and “Artichokes”), are a very old type of spinning aerial firework that have been used in public displays at least as far back as the 1700s. Launched from a flat surface, they briefly spin on the ground before quickly rising into the air with a large canopy of sparks.  In this seminar, participants will learn how to make a traditional 4-hole tourbillion and have the opportunity to make one in the 1-pound size (3/4 inch bore) that they can fire that evening.

This seminar will discuss the safe use of liquid nitrogen, CO2 and water fog to create steam and fog blasts for entertainment purposes.  We will discuss breakaways and their use in film and television.  Safety and specialized equipment will also be covered.  Emphasis and demos will consist of CO2 and breaking a piece of glass.

Automation and Electronic Controllers

This seminar has been designed for the novice who has minimal or no experience with automation.  The basics will be presented as simply as possible so that everyone can understand.  Any questions you have will be answered.  Topics will include how to trigger or fire electric circuits to manipulate valves, pumps, motors, lighting and audio.  The information in this seminar can be applied to a volcano eruption with fire, steam, geysers, fog, audio and lighting.  It can be used for simple tricks or gags for haunted and themed attractions.  And - It's fun!

Youth opportunities in PGI

Youth are our future adult members of PGI.  I am inviting course instructors, safety team members, adults, youth and the Junior Pyros to a moderated discussion and brain storming session about the possibilities and limitations of youth participation in seminars and workshops, as well as developing guidelines for expansion of youth programs.  Past PGI instructors have indicated that they would be interested and willing to develop workshops for youth members.  All groups; safety, instructors, parents and youth need to have input to develop a dynamic and interesting program and this seminar will be the chance to do it.

Getting Legal : How to Obtain Your ATF Explosives License

This course will cover everything you need to know in order to apply for and obtain an ATF explosives permit.  Topics include license requirements, license types, record keeping, storage requirements, transportation laws, the impact of state and local laws, overcoming objections, and other related information.  A handout will be provided with information on what to do to start the process.  We will also discuss storage alternatives, including inexpensive magazine alternatives.  The presentation will use PowerPoint slides to lead the discussion.
